About Us
Ballarat Locating Services is a CertLoc Certified Locating Organisation and is a member of the National Utility Locating Contractors Association of Australia Ltd (NULCA). We are fully insured, compliant with CertLoc requirements and the requirements of all buried asset owners (such as Telstra and Optus). If you need a copy of our insurance certificates, please ask.
We have experience working with larger organisations that may require onboarding procedures and paperwork (such as local councils or multi-national companies).
Meet David Hunter

David has always had a passion for what could be found below ground. This lead him to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology at La Trobe University.
Early in David’s career, he worked at a school in Melbourne, where he became aware of the possibility of remnants of old building foundations being buried under the current school grounds. Wanting to know exactly where the old wall foundations were, David learnt how to build crude geophysical equipment which enabled him to successfully locate the old buildings and gardens.
This started his interest in geophysics.
Since then, David started his first business, Hunter Geophysics, where he worked as a Telstra Accredited Plant Locator (as it was known then) until he was approached to find unmarked graves in cemeteries. The grave detection part of his business flourished, which has resulted in extensive experience with ground-penetrating radar. He also has worked on a variety of one-off projects, such as mapping bedrock in Melbourne for water infrastructure and communications cable projects, and mapping buried rubbish tips for the EPA (Environment Protection Authority, Victoria).
David has consulted for multiple universities, police agencies, mines, utility detection companies, and utility asset owners worldwide.
David is Australia's only distributor for GPR-SLICE software, which required him to become well-versed in all uses of ground-penetrating radar so he can teach software users how to collect, process, and understand their GPR data.
David moved to Ballarat in 2022 as most of his business was being carried out in western Victoria. He has resumed working as a CertLoc certified utility locator and has spun this off into a new separate business - Ballarat Locating Services.
